Sew 'n' Tell Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes

June 24, 2010

Meeting began at 6:30PM with 27 members present and 1 guest (Irene C). Among those that were absent due to a known family emergency or illness:
• Nancy F - had an outpatient diagnostic test today - hope you are feeling better and the results are good.
• Donna G - lost a close family friend and had to go out of town suddenly - our condolences.
• Thank you both for thinking of the guild by contacting another guild member to ensure that your items made it to the meeting, especially in your time of trouble. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Announcement: Trunk Show presented by Pat Knoechel (Eleanor Burns' sister) on June 27 (Sunday) from 2 to 4 PM. Cost: $3.00, call Joan Weber at 812-952-3079 for a reservation (only 10 seats left). Show will be held in the Carriage House at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1015 East Main Street, New Albany. For directions, go to http://stpaulna.org and click on directions from your home. The Carriage House (smaller building) is located behind the main church. Parking in the church lot and on the street.****

Quilts for the Homeless - Sharon K will bring examples of the quilts that her church makes for the homeless to the July Meeting. They are simple hand-tied quilts (twin or queen) that have a strap to allow them to be carried like a bed roll. The need becomes more urgent as winter approaches so Sharon will let us know as Fall approaches when the church will hold their sit n sew meetings. Anyone in our guild is invited and encouraged to attend and help them produce these quilts. Currently, they have only 3 ladies making them and need our help.

Charity Guild Quilts - Anne K - The charity quilt sit n sew was cancelled due to lack of people signing up. Apologies to those who did not get the word that it had been cancelled. Since so many of us are vacationing over the summer, it was decided that the charity quilts sit n sew will be tabled until the end of summer. Anne has kits available for those who wish to work on them at their homes. The guild has newly donated material, batting, and backings available. Let Anne know before the July meeting and she will bring kits to the July meeting. Nancy Foster sent a finished quilt top, Vivian Shatley and Julia Gatsos brought a finished quilt to add to the donation pile.

Demos - Janice B has demos scheduled through November of this year. This month Jeanne K did a demo on how to make your own border quilting stencils which was very creative and relatively easy to do. She uses recycled cardboard and saves her patterns to use over and over.
• First measure the sashing and decide how many repeats of the pattern and how large the repeat needs to be for each side so that they come out even in the corners. (larger repeats and wider patterns for longer and wider sashings etc...)
• Then, measure out and mark the size of the repeat with dots on graph paper, making sure that each repeat is the same width and length.
• She then traces the outline of plates, cups, bowls, and other items from her dishes to get an arc that matches the repeat on the paper. The variations are unlimited as you can overlap the arcs creating diamond patterns or no overlap creating a scalloped effect.
• Then extend the repeat by tracing the first one on another sheet marked with about 4 to 5 repeat lengths.
• Cut along the outer edge of one side of the traced pattern.
• Trace it onto cardboard making sure you transfer the dots so that the pattern can be extended the entire length of the sashing by matching the dots.
• Trace the cardboard pattern onto the sashing lining up the dots as you extend the pattern along the sashing.
• If I have totally confused you, please contact Jeanne.

Activity - Barbara T - absent, but Carol F. presented Barbara's idea of using the extra funds in the guild money to cater the Christmas party rather than use them to pay for an outing or class that not all members could or would attend.
• Carol has checked with several well known quilting teachers and many want at least $400-600 just to come and give a lecture, plus their travel and lodging expenses. If they teach a class, each attendee would also have to pay $30 to $50 for the class. It was decided to possible explore getting someone in the local area or even one of our own to teach a class for the guild instead.
• It was also suggested that we could obtain slideshows or videos of quilting classes or demos to show at meetings.
• Problems with the idea that were expressed by other members were:
o December 16 was discussed as a possible Party date, but some were concerned that school would not be out or that other Christmas events would also be occurring at this time.
o It will also depend on the availability of the Church to hold the dinner on that date. Carol will check with the Church and let us know.

• The idea was approved by a majority of those present and will be explored further, but the need for other activities was expressed by many members even if the guild could not forego the cost.

Nancy F (absent) sent a flyer about the Southern Indiana Shop Hop featuring Jodie Rothernel's Twelve Oaks fabric. It runs from June 19th to the 26th, so there are only two days left for a cost of $6.00. Several local shops are participating including The Quilting Bee in Georgetown, Hollyhock in Corydon, and Craft Town in Salem. Contact any of these shops for more info.****

If you know of any other upcoming quilting events, please let Barbara T know so that she can get the info and share it with the rest of the guild.

Survey Results - Carol F tabulated the results of the guild survey and announced the following:
• Only 26 out of 51 members returned the surveys
• Everyone liked the guild for very similar reasons - friendly atmosphere, sharing members, sharing ideas and techniques, etc...
• Dislikes most often mentioned and the proposed solutions were:
o Meetings were too long - Carol checked with several other guilds locally and online and discovered that our meetings were actually shorter than most and many other guilds meet more than once a month. Many of the same people who wanted shorter meetings also wanted more demos and a longer break. ?????
o The same people sit with the same groups at each meeting. Mingle ladies and meet new people. Nancy F, Jane G, and Lisa Thilo are working on creating a picture directory that will list each member with their picture and their info that will be distributed to all members. Jane will take individual pictures at the July and August meetings to be used in the directory. Please try and make one of these meetings so that you can be included in the directory.****
o People talking while someone else had the floor, was doing a demo, or during Show n Tell making it impossible to hear. We all do it, let's all try to remember our manners and practice them.
o Demos are often hard to hear or difficult to see. We will work on this one. Suggestions are always welcome.
• Continuing QDO was unanimous and next year's committee will work on making changes to improve it based on the guild survey comments and the feedback from people who attended.
• Some people suggested that we create another part to the meeting that included a help session for those who are stuck or have questions about a technique.
o Since we don't want to add to the meeting length, it was suggested that we adopt a Mentor System. If you bring a new member into the guild, you will be their mentor. If someone comes on their own, they can request a mentor and a volunteer will be assigned. Sheila W requested a mentor and Janice B quickly volunteered to be her mentor. It was also suggested that if you need help or have a question, send out an e-mail to the whole group. Everyone should have a copy of the directory listing all of the e-mail addresses. If you don't want to enter all of those addresses, send your request to Carol F, Lisa T, Dianna S, or Nancy F and they will forward it to the group. If you do not get a response, bring it up at the next meeting.
• 17 out of the 26 members wanted to start a monthly Sit n Sew session. Lisa Thilo will host the first one at her house on Thursday July 8th at 6:00PM to ????. She will be sending out a separate e-mail to all with directions and more details in the coming week. Several members indicated that they will attend.****

Library Basket - Jeanne K brought all of the donated items in a basket this evening. There was a nice collection of patterns, fat quarters, pins, stencils, pin cushions, and rulers, but we still need more. The basket full of quilting supplies will be auctioned by the Friends of the New Albany Library on November 17th, but the October meeting will be the last meeting that items can be donated. Please bring thimbles, fat quarters, stencils, needles, hoops, patterns, or anything related to quilting or sewing etc... to help the Library meet their fund raising goals this year.

Challenge Quilts - Diana H - Diana brought extra patterns and explanation sheets to the meeting and again briefly explained the Challenge quilt idea for this year. IF you need a pattern, please e-mail her so she can get it to you.

Activity of the Month - Sharon K (absent) - Brown Sack Exchanges from last month were returned and included purses, knitting bags, pillow cases, blocks, fabric wallet, wall hangings, and microwave baked potato pockets. Oohs and Aaahs were in abundance.

• July's Activity, in keeping with 4th of July, is to bring a 12 1/2 inch block using red, white, and blue in any block pattern. Limit 3 blocks per person, drawing to be held, winner take all.

Refreshments were provided by Donna G, Darlene N, and Luetta P. Brownies, Zucchini Bread, and Ice Cream. Well done ladies!! Next month, Sharon K, Bea C, and Paula N (replacing Jeri Cl) will whip up July's goodies.

Blue Ticket Items - during the break, Carol F provided a number of items that could be claimed in a drawing using blue tickets. Blocks, scrap bags, cheater fabrics, etc... were enjoyed by all. Thanks Carol.

Round Robins were exchanged for the 2nd time. Again, we wowed each other with our creative and beautiful ideas. Thanks to those who were absent for sending your blocks with someone else. Thanks also to those who will deliver the absentee's blocks to them. Can't wait until next month. Anyone interested in joining in the fun just needs to bring a block, a diary, and a box to put it in, (extra fabric is optional) to the next meeting. Just remember, your finished product will be a few exchanges short. Our current groups are:

Group 1 / Group II
Dianna S / Julia G
Lisa T / Jeanne K
Vivian S / Darlene N
Janice B / Sally A
Sharon K / Marie K
Mary L / Nancy F
Elise K / Bea C

Door Prizes were handed out. Anyone having notions, fabric, etc... to donate to the door prize pile, please bring it to the next meeting. Someone added baked goods to the pile and they went early. We have decided to eliminate Quilting magazines from the door prizes to save time, but they can be placed on a separate table on an exchange basis.

Show n Tell, as usual among our multi-talented group, was again breathtaking. It included Purses, Quilts, Totes, Teddy Bears, Pillows, Wall hangings, and a restored heirloom quilt and featured various techniques including Trapunto, Chenilling, and embroidery.
This week's show also included a few very useful tips:
• If you have an extra block left over from a quilt, use it on the backing as your label.
• When creating a loop for a button closure, use elastic inside the loop to create a more stable and binding loop.
• One of our new members brought an heirloom quilt that had been restored by placing new blocks over the old tattered blocks attaching them to the quilt by quilting over them through the old batting and backing. It was really hard to tell which blocks had been original and which had been replaced.
• www.Crayola.com - This website has many items in the form of coloring pages that are traceable for use as either quilting stencils or appliqué' patches. Check it out.

Meeting adjourned at 8:45.

**** - indicates a new item or upcoming item that needs special attention.
